What Can I Expect?

What does counselling involve?

My aim is to provide you with a space where we can explore anything that isn't working for you at the moment. You may find that a greater understanding and acceptance of yourself lightens the load that you feel you're currently carrying, and gives you the confidence to make any changes that you wish.

We'll talk at your pace, and we'll only work with the issues that you want to bring up. You might not always know what to talk about and that's completely fine.

It will be a counselling environment that is collaborative, supportive and hopeful - a pocket of time in your busy life that is yours, to use how you need.

What I offer

You might want to do a mixture of the two, and that's fine. More information about both options can be found below.

I am able to offer either open-ended or brief (single session) therapy, so you can choose the format that suits you and we can review as we go.

I also offer outdoor and online Clinical Supervision to fellow Counsellors - click here for further information.

What can I expect from a counselling session...

outdoors (walk and talk therapy)?

Outdoor counselling walk and talk therapy in ancient woodland

This is sometimes called Walk and Talk therapy or walking therapy. That said, you do not need to be fit or outdoorsy to benefit from this setting for our sessions.

We can hold our sessions in parks, woodlands, countryside... Wherever you feel most comfortable. Being in nature is shown to have considerable physical and mental benefits, especially if you're nearing burnout. Time outdoors calms our nervous system, relaxes an overworked brain and boosts our creativity and intuition.

Sitting in a traditional counselling room isn't for everyone, and some people find it easier to discuss difficult topics while being side-by-side out in the fresh air.

Before we start, we'll discuss how to maintain your privacy in an outside space. You can set the walking pace and we can do a mixture of walking and sitting, or do the whole session simply sat outdoors.

If you have mobility needs, we can talk those over in our initial phone call and we'll make a plan that works for you.

What can I expect from a counselling session...

online?

Online counselling (through Zoom or similar) enables you to access counselling face-to-face from your computer. You might do this from your home, or from another space that feels private and comfortable.

This can be particularly useful to a number of people, perhaps because of time, location, limited mobility, or convenience.

If the technology isn't familiar to you, I can help you with the setup, and will also offer guidance on how to get the best from online therapy.

If this feels like something that would suit you, you can find other useful information on my Frequently Asked Questions and Fees and Further Information pages.
